Caribbean Homemade Bread

Nothing beats fresh homemade bread, straight from the oven, spread with butter and with slices of cheese or salami in the middle. This simple snack is so yummy and satisfying!

Caribbean Homemade Bread

Ingredients

  • 4 cups all purpose flour

  • 1 tbsp yeast

  • 1 tbsp sugar

  • 1 tsp salt

  • 2 tbsp room temperature butter

  • 1 1/2 cups lukewarm water

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, sugar, salt, and yeast, and butter.

  2. Using clean hands, work the butter into the flour mixture with your fingers, until it takes on a crumbly texture.

  3. Start adding the lukewarm water a little at a time, while using your hand to fold and mix well. Dough should be nice and soft but not sticky.

  4. Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface, and knead with the ball of your hand until it’s smooth. This process helps to activate the yeast and can take from 8 – 10 minutes.

  5. After kneading, place the dough back into the mixing bowl, and cover with cling film (prevents it from drying out), and let this sit for ½ hour.

  6. After resting, take the dough and gently massage it into a oblong shape, and cut into 8 equal pieces.

  7. Take each piece, knead it into a ball, then roll into a cigar shape with pointed ends (for nice crispy ends)

  8. Lay them out on a baking tray, allowing for space in between as they will expand. Cover the tray with a damp towel or cling film, and allow to sit for another 20 – 30 minutes.

  9. Remove towel or cling film, and bake at 300oC for 20 – 25 minutes.

  10. Optional: for a nice glossy buttery crust, lightly brush the surface with some melted butter, or alternatively cut the bread in half while still warm, spread some butter in the middle and enjoy!
